Urban Planning as a Tool for National Development
Abstract
Urban planning is a fundamental instrument for promoting national development, particularly in developing countries experiencing rapid urbanization, population growth, and economic transformation. It provides a systematic framework for organizing land use, infrastructure provision, housing development, transportation systems, and environmental management within urban regions. This study examines urban planning as a strategic tool for national development, emphasizing its multifaceted contributions to economic growth, social development, environmental protection, and institutional governance. Using a position paper methodology, the study synthesizes insights from scholarly literature, policy documents, and empirical studies to evaluate the effectiveness of urban planning policies and practices. The study highlights how well-coordinated planning can improve the efficiency of cities, attract domestic and foreign investments, create employment opportunities, and enhance access to social services such as education, healthcare, and housing. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of environmental sustainability by demonstrating how urban planning can mitigate urban sprawl, reduce pollution, manage waste, and promote green infrastructure to build climate-resilient cities.
