Abstract

The study examined “Teachers’ Use of Effective Teaching Methods on the Acquisition of Students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills in Secondary Schools in Fako Division”. Two research questions guided this study: to what extent does discussion method influence the acquisition of student’s higher order thinking skills in secondary schools? To what extent does explicit teaching influences the acquisition of student’s Higher Order Thinking skills in secondary schools? The design used in this study was multiple case study. All secondary schools in Buea and Limbe 1 subdivision made up the target population. The sample size was 25 history teachers drawn from four schools. Lay private and public schools in Buea and Limbe 1 were used for the study. The researcher used an interview guide and an observation checklist as instruments for data collection. The findings from this research show that teachers have been using the discussion method to teach which greatly impacts the students, also the findings of this study have proven that teachers most frequently carry out daily review, provides feedback and provide independent practice. Recommendations were also made to the government, teachers and students from the research objectives.
