AN ASSESSMENT OF PROBLEMS MILITATING AGAINST POST-GRADUATE SCHOOL IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

Abstract

The paper examined the challenges facing postgraduate schools in Nigerian universities in Nigeria. The paper concluded that inadequate funding, poor research infrastructure, weak supervision and mentorship, administrative bottlenecks, brain drain and shortage of qualified staff, poor research-industry linkages andinadequate ICT and digital resources are some of the challenges militating against effectiveness of post-graduate schools in the Nigerian universities. Repositioning postgraduate schools in Nigerian universities is essential to enhance research quality, promote innovation, and ensure alignment with national development goals. Increased funding and financial autonomy, curriculum review and research relevance, improved supervision and mentorship, strengthening research infrastructure, capacity building for academic staff, enhancing ICT integration and digital learning, promoting university–industry collaboration, strengthening quality assurance and accreditation, internationalization and collaboration and administrative reforms and policy support are some of the strategies to repositioning the post-graduate schools in the Nigerian universities.
