The Role of Peer Influence in Shaping Negative Attitudes and Academic Performance

Abstract

This study examines the multifaceted relationship between peer influence, negative attitudes, and academic performance among adolescent students. Using a mixed-methods approach with 450 high school students (ages 14-18), we investigate how peer networks contribute to the formation of negative academic attitudes and subsequent performance outcomes. Results indicate a significant negative correlation (r = -0.68, p < 0.001) between negative peer influence and academic achievement. The study identifies three primary mechanisms: social conformity pressures, academic disengagement modeling, and collective norm establishment. Structural equation modeling reveals that peer influence accounts for 42% of variance in attitude formation and 31% of variance in academic performance. These findings have substantial implications for educational interventions and policy development.
