The objective of the study was to examine and prove whether or not the mental model affected the speaking ability of the second-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Nommensen HKBP University Medan. The research was conducted using an experimental quantitative design. This study deals with the effect of the mental model on students speaking ability of second-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Nommensen HKBP University Medan. The population of this study was the students at second-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Nommensen HKBP University Medan. There were two classes of which students were 30 in each class. The population was a total of 60 students. The sample was divided into two groups. Group A as the experimental group was the group that was taught by applying the mental model and Group B as the control group was taught by applying the conventional model. The instrument for collecting data was a speaking test.  From the data calculation, the researcher found that the mean score of the experimental group was 24, the mean score of the control group was 20.1, the deviation score of the experimental group (dx²) was 1607, and the deviation of the control group (dy²) was 454.7.  It means that the mental model is significantly affected by the speaking achievement of second-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Nommensen HKBP University Medan.  The Improvement of speaking achievement of students who were taught by using the mental model was better than students who were taught without using the mental model.  Therefore, it was suggested that English teachers apply a mental model in teaching speaking, especially for students.
